What is Paint Correction?
Paint Correction is the process of returning the paint to exactly how the chemical engineers that developed the coatings and vehicle manufactures intended them to look.
Why would a vehicle need Paint Correction?
Unfortunately after the vehicle rolls out of the assembly line, there can be a multitude of paint related mishaps that can and usually do happen. Regular washing and maintenance can also be a major factor in swirls mark scratches.
How is Paint Corrected?
Paint correction is achieved through the correct use and combinations of compounds, swirl removers, polishes, machines, pads and most importantly technique.
Is all paint the same?
NO... There are many different brands, and many more variations within each brand. Vehicle manufactures use a slightly different variation to the local refinishers. Many European marques have been using ceramiclear coatings for some time, these specialty coatings have a resistance to scratching making correcting them quite challenging using anything other then the correct compounds manufactured specifically for these finishes.
How much paint is there?
This is the interesting part...... an average reading of OEM paint (the original factory finish) is 140microns. The thickness of a single piece of everyday office 80GSM photocopy/printer paper is 110microns. BUT........ The 140 microns of painted surface is the whole film thickness, this includes the primer, base coat (colour) and the clear. We can only polish the clear, so this gives us an approx amount of 1/3 the total film thickness...... thats right around 40-50microns, less then half the thickness of the photocopy paper. Take a piece of copy/printer paper and imagine working with a film build up half the thickness.
Now, can you understand why we take this so seriously?
Infact so serious, That Driven By Shine has invested in arguably two of the best Paint Thickness Guages available. The DeFelsko Positest 6000 and DeFelsko Positest 200 meaning we can accuratly measures the thickness of film build up on every surface, from traditional metal and plastic panels to the many exotic meterials that are becoming popular on current vehicles such as Carbon Fibre, Aluminium and Fibreglass.
